A hum with no rotation means the motor has power and the plate can't move. Something is wedged. The electrics are fine, the motor is fine, and holding that switch down for another five seconds is how a free fix becomes a replacement.
Complete silence means no power is reaching the motor at all. Nothing is jammed — the circuit is broken somewhere between the panel and the unit, and that includes a safety device on the unit itself designed to break it.
It runs but grinds badly means power and rotation are both fine, and the problem is what's doing the grinding.
It runs perfectly but the sink fills means the disposal isn't the fault at all. It's doing its job and the waste has nowhere to go.

A Jam
Power is fine — the plate can't movePower is reaching the motor — that's what the hum is — and something between the impellers and the grind ring is stopping the plate.
Most units have a hex socket in the centre of the base and come with a matching wrench. Fit it and work the plate back and forth until it turns freely. No wrench? The handle of a wooden spoon inserted from above, levered against an impeller, does the same job.
The jam will almost certainly have tripped it — and try again.
A bottle cap, a bone fragment, a fruit stone, a piece of cutlery, a twist tie, a bread bag clip, or a chip of crockery.
Something is still in there or the bearings are failing. That's a visit.
No Power Reaching the Motor
Three places the circuit breaksOn the underside of the unit, usually red, and it pops out when the motor overloads. A meaningful share of "dead" disposals are simply waiting for someone to push it back in — most people don't know it exists. Reach underneath, find it, press it firmly.
Some disposals sit on their own circuit. Check the panel.
Many units are plugged into a switched outlet under the sink. Confirm it's plugged in and that the switch controlling that outlet is on.
If all three are fine and it's still silent, that's a genuine electrical or motor fault — and we'll arrive already knowing what it isn't.
The Grinding Itself
Power and rotation are both fineAfter years of use, the components that break waste down have blunted. Performance degrades gradually enough that people adapt to it without noticing.
Something hard is in there that shouldn't be. Switch off and look before running it again.
Bearing wear. A motor condition rather than an adjustment, and on most domestic units it means replacement rather than repair.
Frequently the wrong material — fibrous or starchy waste that wraps and pastes rather than breaking up — or insufficient water carrying it through.
Not a Disposal Fault

Usually grease, coffee grounds, or fine debris that has accumulated downstream of the unit over months.
Or the knockout plug was never removed at installation — a common finding where a dishwasher backs up into the sink.
Which confirms the problem is past the disposal rather than in it.
Say this on the call. It's drain work rather than disposal work, and knowing that in advance means we arrive with the right equipment instead of the wrong one.
Three positions, three completely different outcomes.
The mounting flange seal has failed. A reseat with fresh sealant and correct tightening — a repair, not a replacement. Common, and frequently misdiagnosed as a dead unit.
The discharge outlet or the dishwasher connection — a hose, a clamp, or a gasket. Also a repair, and usually a quick one.
Different story entirely. Water emerging from the body means the internal seals have failed and water has been inside the motor housing. These are sealed assemblies that aren't designed to be opened. That unit is finished, and anything sold as a repair for it isn't one.
Which is why "it's leaking" needs one more sentence from you: from the top, the side, or the bottom? Two of those are inexpensive fixes and one is a replacement.
Being run against a jam. Holding the switch while the motor strains is the fastest way to destroy one. Hum without rotation means switch off, not push harder.

Yes, despite what you may have heard. Grounds grind fine and settle downstream as a dense sludge. Eggshell membranes wrap the impellers and the shell becomes a grit that accumulates. Both belong in the bin.
Cold, always, and running well after you've finished. Hot water melts fats so they travel further before setting, which moves your future blockage somewhere less accessible.
Several years with reasonable use, considerably longer if it's never run against a jam and never fed things it can't handle. Heavy use and hard items shorten it markedly.
Frequently the knockout plug in the disposal's dishwasher inlet, which has to be removed at installation and sometimes isn't. Otherwise a blocked connection hose. Both are straightforward.
Where the fault is serviceable, yes — jams, flange seals, discharge connections, splash guards, and dishwasher inlets all repair. Motors, bearings, and corroded housings generally don't, because most units aren't built to be rebuilt and the cost approaches a new one.
The residue is usually under the splash guard rather than in the chamber. Lift or remove it and clean the underside — that's where the smell actually lives. Ice and citrus help the chamber but won't reach the guard.
Not necessarily. If yours has failed and you rarely used it, a plain waste and trap is cheaper, simpler, and one less thing to go wrong. We'll say so rather than selling you a replacement by default.
