It sits so long between regenerations that the resin bed goes stale, and you've paid for capacity you'll never draw.
Your tested hardness, your calculated demand, the recommended unit's capacity, and how often it will regenerate. A quote without those numbers is a guess with a price on it.
Discolouration, taste, or smell needs identifying before anything is specified. A softener is the wrong purchase for all three, and installing one on iron-bearing water damages the unit as well as failing to solve the problem.
